Strategic, not appropriate, secrecy

Anil Dash on Apple's "shift" in secrecy:

But in just 18 months, there has been a fundamental shift in the way the company communicates about the issues which have the greatest social impact on the world.

I agree entirely that there has been a fundamental shift, but that shift has been in the way Apple provides misdirection on potentially damaging issues. The stoic silence of the past becomes untenable as a company gains additional publicity and notoriety. A statement from a company does nothing to eliminate secrecy as it may or may not be true. In Apple's case it certainly evaporates the issue efficiently.
